Well, the title says it all. Losers that we are, we decided to be responsible and not go into any debt to go and enjoy the sea and so we are “staycationing” this week at, well, home. My frugal mind is satisfied with this arrangement and my anxiety is happy that we aren’t on some gawd awful road trip from hell today but my soul is weeping and crying out for the siren call of the ocean. This may be the saddest week of my life. <sigh> I really need to buck up. It was kind of my idea after all. Still, its kind of depressing.
Yesterday was the last day of school for the kiddos so I plucked them off the bus and took them for ice cream with a friend, then to, wait for it… the library. Can you stand the excitement? Well, actually I love the library and I could have stayed there all evening. I picked up the books I had reserved and grabbed Pirates of the Caribbean to watch after finishing season 5 of Downton Abbey. I also made sure to reserve season 6. And because I hate myself I grabbed Eat, Pray, Love which I am sure I will hate but I like Julia Roberts so why not? Even if its heretical.
Later I tried to surprise my husband with dinner out and arranged for my older daughter to babysit the littles only hubby had eaten a late lunch and we were both kind of moping around so we went to Home Depot and looked at paint and doors and fasteners. If that doesn’t scream “PERFECT VACATION” I don’t know what does. We eventually found ourselves at a restaurant eating poutine and salad and a blessed glass of wine. Being old, we were home by 10:30. What a rocking time we are having.
This morning I slept in. Hubby had to go to work this morning instead of the weekend trip I had planned for us because everyone’s little unicorn children are graduating and he is the picture guy at school. Plus, the babysitting daughter got a job and will be there all day today. Since I am the one who is doing the happy dance that she will finally be learning the true cost of things I shouldn’t complain. We would have just taken the littles with us to the Celtic Fling weekend but now it’d be half over by the time we got there and we have to be back Monday for another event we have planned. So I am pouting and looking at Facebook and being generally annoyed. Actually, this sounds just like our usual vacations with kids except we are saving a boatload of money. Maybe this isn’t so bad after all. At least the sun is out today.
The rest of the day will likely include something like making steamed clams and corn on the cob if Wegmans has clams this time. I struck out last week when I went to buy some. If no clams then lobster tails because 4 frozen lobster tails at Weggies is cheaper than 1 broiled in a restaurant these days. See? Still saving $$. I also plan on finishing the second book in the Outlander series since I have now renewed it the max # of times from the library and am now incurring fines for not having finished it yet. 10 cents per day is a price I am willing to pay of book “rental” so I can finish to darned thing. Dragon Fly in Amber is good but not quite as good as Outlander hence the delay: I fall asleep faster reading it at night. (My friend Anne wrote about her plan for summer reading. Check it out HERE.)
Well there you have my very exciting plan for the day. I hope you can contain your excitement and enthusiasm to try it yourself. In the meantime I am going to go supervise the child who is making soup on the stove and clean out my fridge. Those fuzzy cherry tomatoes must go…
I need a Bloody Mary.
